It would be both illegal and unethical in either case, Kate. As educators, we have been entrusted with the well-being of our students, and to violate that trust is a very serious infringement. The most important thing now is to find the student in question and make sure they receive the help they need.
I've already spoken with Miss Rochefort, and she told me that what she heard was a rumor. I believe I have impressed upon her the importance of reporting such gossip to the proper authorities in the future, but even if what she heard is not true, that does not mean she made it up, or had any malicious intent.
